THE BIKINI FOR ALL SEASONS

Dare to bare in an itsy-bitsy bikini... or even a monokini! Desi Eye dares to update you on the bikini fest!

As lazy beach barbeques and nights of aqua abandon scorch one’s summer soiree, it’s time to flaunt the bikini. Like its wearer, the bikini is a much more evolved entity that even desi designers seem to be swearing by. Delhi-based designer Ranna Gill, whose line of printed swimwear sells at £30 a piece, says designer bikinis are ‘sexier’, with fun cuts and funkier tones.

Nikhil Mehra of the designer duo Shantanu-Nikhil feels its versatility makes it a staple in resort wear. “In a season of heady Arabic i n f l u e n c e s , wear the bikini under a free flowing, one- off shoulder, chiffon kaftan and jewelled Moroccan sandals. Or under a short tennis dress with pumps and an interesting sports bag. Or get loungey donning it under an oversized men’s shirt with a big belt and a large tote,” he recommends. Abetting the popularity of the bikini cult are our modern-day silver screen goddesses — from the svelte Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu in Dhoom 2 to waif-like Bebo in Tashan. Delhi-based designer Rina Dhaka too has just put together an entire beach wardrobe for actress Lara Dutta in the upcoming flick Blue. Dhaka says, “Women daring to bare in bikinis are those who’ve invested a lot on their bodies and want to show off their curves,” she adds. The bikini wave is huge internationally too with hot bods donning swimwear with a nautical twist. Halter-striped bikinis in navy blue and coral red and plunging neckline swim-suits in contrasts of orange and fuschia are the toast ofthe bikini circuit. The one-piece bikini has made a comeback, adding a dose of elegance, especially to women with a n o t - so - t i ny waist. A chic, black, halter neck one-piece bikini is definitely the ‘one-piece’ you can’t holiday without. If adventure is your calling, get bootylicious in the latest cutaway bikini, also referred to as ‘monokini’. The cut-away swim-suit’s a great alternative, giving you greater coverage around your stomach, but providing an increased tanning area than a one-piece. This summer, Dhaka adds, the accent is on, “fluorescent, solid tones of zesty orange, citrusy lime and canary yellow.” Metallic shades and embellishments are the next bet, so if your twopiece drips gold metallic trimmings along the edges, your glam quotient just got more envious.

Summer also spells exotic holidays, so flaunt your wild side in a two-piece in leopard or zebra prints! Another hot trend, if you’re conscious of

the transparency factor in the pool, are multidensity Afro tribal and jungle prints in asymmetrical and one-shoulder styles. “Embellishments match the resorty feel,” says Dhaka. Invest in bikinis with broad, jewelled waistbands (aka the desi kamarbandh) or bikinis in rich jewel tones of emerald green and copper with tie-up buckles on the side, embroidered accents and precious sequins. It will be a semi-outfit!

Freed of inhibitions and ready to face the future, the bikini is here to stay.

MALE SWIMWEAR

For years, male swimwear was restricted to basic Speedo products or boxer-styled swimming gear. But these days, there’s no dearth of choices for the man who isn’t afraid to flaunt his stuff.

For a regular pool plunge, a standard cut men’s swimwear bikini offers a slim front pouch and well-defined rear coverage.

If you prefer comfort, go in nautical inspired swimming trunks. 80s inspired shades, neon brights and wild prints are very in at the moment.

If you’re in the mood for adventure, opt for the micro Brazilian bikinis. If you intend on getting a tad raunchy with your girl, lay your hands on thong styled swimwear with a fabric panel on the suit’s top rear.

If you have a well-toned, hot bod, select a G-string swimwear style with lycra straps. Designer Narendra Kumar Ahmed says an upcoming trend is broad surfer shorts with digital graphics and floral wall paper patterns
